HISTORY OF PACIFIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP Pacific Coast Championship, Inc. (PCC) formerly known as The Western Federation of Tennis Clubs was founded in 1916 by Dr. Alva Garrett. The first meeting was held at the YMCA in Los Angeles. The Federation was composed of tennis players from the Los Angeles area. The PCC currently consists of eleven member clubs in Los Angeles, San Diego, Berkeley, Bakersfield and Sacramento. The organization was formed to meet the competitive needs of Black tennis players who were excluded from white tournaments. Since that time, the PCC has grown tremendously and has been able to meet the many needs of tennis players of all ages and races. The tournament is held every Labor Day Weekend and hosted by different clubs at selected tennis facilities and hotels throughout California. Proceeds from this annual tournament are used to promote and develop tennis programs for disadvantaged youth in their respective cities. The PCC Board convenes three times a year. The Board exchanges information and gives support and guidance toward operation of the annual Tournament. There is a general meeting held during the tournament for all members. The main objectives of the PCC are for the enjoyment of tennis participation, focusing on junior development with emphasis in sportsmanship, physical fitness and character building.
